8th.: Psalm 59, Part 2, Look at What They Do

David poetically continues,
“They return at evening; they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.
Behold, they belch out with their mouth. Swords are in their lips.
For who, say they, does hear? But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them.
Thou shalt have all the heathen in derision.
Because of his strength will I wait upon thee, for God is my defense.” (Ps. 59:6-9).

David notes how schemers boast. Yet, David confidentially declares that this boasting cannot defeat God.

David resumed,
“The God of my mercy shall precede me.
God shall let me see upon mine enemies.
Slay them not, lest my people forget.
Scatter them by thy power, and bring them down,
O Lord our shield.” (Ps. 59:10-11).

David then boasts in how God would lead the way.
David asked to be able to look upon his adversaries as a conqueror.
David suggested letting his opponents live, so that the opponent’s lives remind people,
“God helps David.” As an aside, David asked that his enemies be scattered,
presumably, so that they cannot go on the offensive again.
This boasting, and relying on God’s might, and also wanting the people to credit God, very much pleased God.

Return to Home
“But let him that glories, glory in this, that he understands and knows me that I am the Lord which exercise lovingkindness, judgement, and righteousness, in the earth, for in these things I delight,” (Jer. 9:24)
