7th.: Jacob’s altar and pillar
God told Jacob to return to Luz.
It was in Luz, where Jacob had the dream of God talking to him (Gen. 28:1-7, 35:6).
At his return, Jacob built an altar per the Lord’s command (Gen. 35:1-7).
Also while there, God appeared to him again (Gen. 35:9-12):
And reaffirmed
1) Jacob’s new name Israel.
2) Jacob would have many descendants.
3) Jacob’s descendants would get all the land round-about.
Jacob/Israel asked no questions, and made no requests.
But the meeting touched him so much, that he made a pillar.
Theologians didn’t say so, but it seemed like this monumental structure was grander than the altar he had earlier made.
As said at other times, when God makes a list of promises or gives instructions, we don’t necessarily need to ask questions.
Nevertheless, God’s touch upon us can leave big impressions in our lives.
“Thou has beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me. It is high, I cannot attain to it.” (Ps. 139:5-6)
