6th.: Moses: and the Glory of God
After receiving God’s promise (Exo. 33:17), Moses asked,
“I beseech thee, show me thy glory.” (Exo. 33:18).
Moses wanted to see the very core of God’s being.
God was not angry. Rather he said,
“‘I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee,
and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.’
And he said, ‘Thou cannot see my face; for there shall no man see me, and live. …
Thou shalt see my back parts, but my face shall not be seen.’” (Exo. 33:19-23).
God chose to show Moses a filtered image of God’s glory.
Jesus taught us,
“… all that are in the graves shall come forth …, they that have done good unto the
resurrection of life, and they that have done evil unto the resurrection of damnation.” (John 5:28b-29).
God will give everyone immortality. Jesus also taught about being cast into hellfire (see Mark 9:47).
One hypothesis is that one day God shall put His full glory into view. As the sun heats up dark spots, so the light of God’s glory shall shine on sins, and heat them up, forever burning its owner. However, those sin spots, which God has removed, shall not burn. Let us ask Jesus to cleanse us, as it is written, “The blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.” (1st John 1:7).
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.’ (Matt 5:8)
