5th.: What is Your Name?
As we saw yesterday, Jacob got into a wrestling match with a stranger.
(see Genesis chapter 32)
During the match the stranger threw Jacob's hip out of joint.
Still, Jacob would not let go, until the
stranger gave his name, “Tell me, I pray thee, thy name?”
His adversary answered his question with a question,
“Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name?” (Gen. 32:29).
Jacob could not answer this question.
Centuries later, a man named Manoah met the angel of the Lord, and asked the same question,
and included a reason for asking the name, “Manoah said unto the angel of the Lord,
‘What is thy name, that when thy sayings come to pass, we may do thee honor?’
And the angel of the Lord said unto him, ‘Why ask thou thus after my name, seeing it is remarkable?’” (Judg. 13:18).
For whatever reason, the Lord was being cagey. But he did give Manoah a little more information than He gave Jacob/Israel.
Be ready to ask the Lord questions. He might answer with a question, or otherwise avoid giving a straight answer.
But don’t be afraid to ask the question(s).
Return to Home“Ask from the one side of heaven unto the other, whether there has been any such thing as this great thing.” (Deut. 4:32b)
