31st.: Psalm 40
Psalm 40 covers several ideas such as
Waiting
Being pulled out a morass, and set on firm ground,
Trusting God,
Etc. Today we shall look at one point.
Only one of which will be covered today.
The Psalmist writes,
"Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O Lord.
Let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.
Mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up.
They are more than the hairs of mine head. Therefore my heart fails me." (Psalm 40:11-12)
Here, the psalmist comes to grips with just how deep his evil nature is.
He is ashamed ("not able to look up"). He is in dispair ("my heart fails me").
Yet he knows that he can go to God, because God is merciful.
He also knows that God can preserve him.
Prayers like these indicate humility. And they show confidence in the mercies of God.
Let likewise approach God with this attitude and confidence.
