2nd.: Why Have You Made Treaties?

Judges chapter 1 shows the Israelites totally destroying some people groups, but not others.
The groups that were not wiped out became tributaries to the Israelites (e.g. Judg 1:28, 30, 33).
These inhabitants could live, if they agreed to pay money.

Because of this, the angel of the Lord rebuked the Israelites,
“I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land, which I sware unto your fathers. …
And ye shall make no league [i.e. treaties] with the inhabitants of this land. …
But ye have not obeyed my voice. Why have ye done this?” (Judg. 2:1-2).
The Israelites responded with:

“the people lifted up their voice and wept, and they sacrificed unto the Lord.” (Judg. 2:4b, 5b).

The people’s weeping and sacrifices to God were good.
But their prayers could not disannull the agreements they had made.

As God said, “they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you.” (Judg. 2:3).
The Israelites should have sought the Lord before signing.
Likewise take contracts to the Lord, to get his input, before signing.

“Be not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness, and what communion has light with darkness, and what concord has Christ with Beliah, or what part has he that believes with an infidel.” (2nd Cor. 6:14-15)
