29th.: Elisha’s Request
At the Mt. Horeb retreat, God told Elijah,
"Anoint Elisha to be prophet in thy room” (1st Kings 19:16b).
Elijah did as commanded.
In the wilderness, Elijah asked Elisha to stop walking with him.
Elisha refused (2nd Kings 2:6b).
Finally, Elijah asked Elisha,
“Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away.”
Elisha responded,
“Let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.”
Elijah told Elisha that this was a hard thing that he requested.
With God's Spirit comes a lot of power.
Power that God requires to be used responsibly.
And also, power, that would be used to advance God's wishes.
[as he would be expected to use it for the Lord].
Nevertheless, if Elisha were to see Elijah taken away, Elisha would get his request (2nd Kings 2:9-10).
Elisha stuck with Elijah long enough to see Elijah taken away.
Elisha then received that power.
Elisha went on to do twice as many recorded miracles as Elijah.
(You can always count up the number of miracles that each did in the two books of Kings.)
If the Lord were to ask you, What special thing would you like me to give you?”
What would you tell him?
Return to Home... how much more shall your heavenly Father give the holy Spirit to them that ask Him? (Luke 11:13b)
