28th.: Isaac’s Lie

Famine struck the land of Canaan.
Isaac and Rebekah packed their bags.
They headed for Philistia (See Genesis 26:1).
God spoke to Isaac. He told Isaac not to go down to Egypt, but to stay in Philistia.
God also reaffirmed his promises to Isaac. (Gen. 26:2-5).
In Philistia, Isaac repeated his father’s lie about telling people that his wife was his sister,
because he was afraid that the men of the land would kill him for her (Gen. 26:7).

Sometime later the king of the Philistines, Abimelech, noticed that Isaac treated Rebekah more like a wife, than a sister.
So Abimelech asked Isaac. Isaac confirmed that Rebekah was really his wife (Gen. 26:8-9).
Isaac’s lie must have saddened God. Despite personally hearing God’s promises from the Lord,
Isaac did not trust God to protect him.

When we lie, the lie comes from our fears, but not God.
Nevertheless, God was faithful. He gently rebuked Isaac via Abimelech.
Applying this situation to ourselves, when something puts fear into our hearts, we can take
those concerns to God, as it is written, “… Casting all your care upon Him, for he cares for you.” (1st Pet. 5:7).
