27th.: Elijah’s Enlightenment
In 1st Kings 19 Elijah fled from Queen Jezebel.
Queen Jezebel had threatened his life.
In his complaining to God, Elijah asked God to take his life.
Rather than take his life, the angel of the Lord fed Elijah.
Elijah then departed to Mount Horeb, to have a one-on-one retreat with the Lord (see 1st Kings 19:5-9).
God opened the conversation with a question.
Lord, “What doest thou here?” (1st Kings 19:9b),
Elijah responded:
Elijah, “I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts. For the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant,
thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword. And I, even I only, am left. And they seek my life to take it away.” (1st Kings 19:10).
We see here that while he was away from the pressure of Jezebel, he no longer asked to die.
Instead, Elijah told God the spiritual status of life in Israel.
However, Elijah knew only part of the whole situation.
God told Elijah that God had actually reserved for himself 7,000 faithful others,
who still worshipped God, and not the false god Baal (see 1st Kings 19:18).
Likewise, we don’t always know the whole situation.
Nevertheless, we must keep open the lines of communication with God.
“May … the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that ye may know what is the hope of his calling.” (Eph. 1:18a)
