26th.: Elijah’s Flight
At a drought ended, Elijah challenged king Ahab of Israel to a spiritual duel (1st Kings 17-18).
King Ahab, and his priests, were to make an offering to their false god, Baal.
At the same time, Elijah would make an offering to the Lord.
Each group was to ask their respective God to come down, and light the fire of the offering.
The God that lit the fire would be the real God.
God made fire come down from heaven to burn up the offering.
Elijah won.
The people then executed the prophets of the false god (1st Kings 18 gives the details).
When Ahab’s wife, Queen Jezebel, heard about this duel, she threatened Elijah (1st Kings 19:2).
Elijah fled.
He also complained to God, “It is enough. Now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am not better than my fathers.” (1st Kings 19:4b).
Elijah had not been afraid of King Ahab’s trash-talk (1st Kings 18:17).
But, Jezebel made no hollow threats. Elijah did not like the tension he felt.
He thought that it would be better to have the peace of a dead man,
than to continue with Jezebel’s contention.
If we feel similar tensions in our life, take those feelings to the Lord.
Return to Home“But in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” (Phili. 4:6-7)
