24th.: Finding Isaac’s Wife, Part 1
Thirty seven years after Isaac’s birth, Sarah died (Gen. 23:1-2).
Abraham then commanded his best servant to find a wife for Isaac.
But the servant had to go to Abraham's native land to find one from among Abraham’s kinsmen.
But how would he find a marriageable female cousin for Isaac?
The servant turned his attention to Abraham's God.
He asked God,
“O Lord God of my master Abraham, I pray thee, send me good speed this day, and show kindness unto my master Abraham. Behold I stand here by the well of water, and the daughters of the men of the city come out to draw water. And let it come to pass, that the damsel to whom I shall say, ‘Let down thy pitcher, I pray thee, that I may drink’, and she say, ‘Drink, and I will give thy camels drink also, let the same be she that thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac, and thereby shall I know that thou has showed kindness unto my master.” (Gen. 24:12-14).
The servant appealed to Abraham’s position with God,.
The servant appealed to the promises that God had made to Abraham.
The servant asked for a sign from God.
The servant listed his circumstances.
He also suspected that the average girl would not want to keep pouring water,
until the camels were done, so he thought this request would be a good ‘minor miracle’ or sign to reveal God’s will.
Gen. 24:15-67 shows how God answered his prayer.
