15th.: Sarah’s Laughter
After lunch, God and His traveling companions inquired about Sarah (Gen. 18:9).
The Lord said that Sarah would have a child after ‘the time of life’ (i.e. nine month gestation period, Gen. 18:10b).
Sarah laughed.
How could she have a baby - she had already gone through menopause - a long time ago (Gen 18:11b).
The Lord mentioned that she laughed (Gen 18:12-13).
Who was this guy?
How could he see her unspoken thoughts?
She tried to lie here way out,
“Sarah then denied this, ‘I laughed not.’ For she was afraid.” (Gen. 18:15a).
Other than confirming His previous statement (Gen. 18:15b), the Lord did not punish her.
Sometime later, she must have concluded that she could believe what He said.
If nothing else, the writer of Hebrews tells us,
“Through faith, also Sarah received strength to conceive seed and was delivered of a child,
when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.” (Heb. 11:11).
If we will believe that God will do for us, what He says He will do for us,
then we too can receive the strength that Sarah received.
“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusts in thee.” (Isa. 26:3)
