What is a Christian?
This question is a good place to start.
Many people have many different definitions for what ‘A Christian’ is.
The term was first used in the New Testament, in the 1st Century A.D.
“And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch.” (Acts 11:26c).
These were people, who believed that Jesus historically died on a Roman cross to pay for their sins.
Then on the third day* he came back to life, and was seen by many people.
To them, Jesus was God who came to Earth in the flesh, as a human.
However, for the purposes of his essay, Russell used a looser definition,
“I think you must have at the very lowest the belief that Christ was, if not divine,
at least the best and wisest of men.
If you are not going to believe that much about Christ,
I do not think you have any right to call yourself a Christian.”
For the purposes of this essay, this definition will work fine.
* Died on Friday; In the grave on Saturday; Rose from the dead on Sunday - i.e. on the third day.
