13th.: Moses’ 2nd Response to his Commission
After God responded to Moses' first concerns, Moses was quick to bring up a second concern,
“Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them,
‘The God of your fathers has sent me unto you’, and they shall say to me, ‘What is his name?’ What shall I say unto them?” (Exo. 3:13).
Moses’ concern changed from the Egyptians to the Israelites.
The people of Israel would want to know which god was supposedly going to save them.
God did not rebuke Moses for this question either.
God responded with,
“’I AM THAT I AM’, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
As some preachers put it, ‘The self-existent one has sent me to you.’
God then added, “Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, ‘The Lord God of your fathers,
the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob has sent me unto you.’” (Exo. 3:14-15).
God reminded Moses of the oral & written histories and prophesies of Israel.
These prophecies described how God appeared to the patriarchs of Israel,
and that this God would bring Israel back to Canaan (It was because of these prophesies,
that Joseph had instructed the Israelites to bring along his dead body, when they left Egypt (see Gen. 50:25, Exo. 13:19, & Josh. 24:32)).
It was this God who sent Moses.
Moses exhibited forethought in this prayer, trying to anticipate the Israelites' wanting to know.
Return to Home“I will go down with thee into Egypt, and I will surely bring thee up again.” (Gen. 46:4)
