12th.: Drought in Judah, part 2
In yesterday's entry, Jeremiah asked the Lord for help.
The Lord said that Israel liked to wander away from Him.
God therefore prepared various punishments for Israel (Jer. 14:10-12),
as Deuteronomy forewarns in chapter 11.
Jeremiah responded,
“Ah, Lord God! Behold, the prophets say unto them,
‘Ye shall not see the sword, neither shall ye have famine.
But I will give you assured peace in this place.’” (Jer. 14:13).
God countered, “The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I sent them not.” (Jer. 14:14a-b).
Jeremiah brought to the Lord’s attention what others claimed that the Lord had said to them.
This gave a good segway to get the Lord's input.
Secondarily, just because famous religious people (like the false prophets of Jeremiah's day)
make claims about God, it does not mean that they actually speak for the Lord (see 2nd Pet. 2:1-2).
We need to take what they say to the Lord, to get His input.
“Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside and serve other gods, and worship them.
And then the Lord’s wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up heaven, that there be no rain.” (Deut. 11:16-17a)
